CORRELATION BETWEEN CARIES EXPERIENCE AND CARIES ACTIVITY TEST SCORE BY SULFISOMIDiNE CONTAINING ACIDIC HIGH SUCROSE LIQUID MEDIUM IN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Abstract
Current knowledge of the carious process indicates that it is influenced by two bacterias : the Streptococcus mutans and the lactobacillus. Bacteriologic caries activity test have been used in dental research for many years. But there is no ideal test in existence at the present time. The purpose of this study was to develop a practical caries activity test for culture of Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli. The new culture medium was prepared. The new medium contained per litcr:300g Sucrose, Ig Beef extract, 2g NaCl 1.Og Bromocresol green. The medium was boiled for 20 minutes in 100¡ÆC. And then cooled to 45¡ÆC. Sulfisomidine was added to medium and this medium was adjusted to pH 5.4 by lactic acid. 4ml of medium was poured into capped vial. The medium was used to cultivate plaque sample from posterior and anterior of lower interdental area.
The plaque sample was obtained by sterile toothpick. Through the 72 hoes of incubation period pH of medium. was evaluated by the color change every 24hour. The pH of medium Was evaluated caries activity score. Caries experience was examined for 185 primary school children. There was statistically significant
correlation between caries experience and test score.
Therefore, Sulfisomidine containing acidic high sucrose liquid medium may be used as culture medium of Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli for caries cativity test.
